Sapper Ernest Metcalf (Royal Engineers) 10, Helen street, formerly of Queen Street, Swinton, has been awarded the Military Medal for bravery and devotion to duty.

He repaired telephone wires under heavy shell-fire on April 9.

He has been serving three years in France.

Before enlistment he was employed at Manvers Main. He is single, aged 23. He was formerly identified with the Manvers Park Football Club.
