A letter from Company Quarter-Master- Sergeant T. Clarkson to Mrs P Sayles, of 55 Victoria Road, Mexborough announcing the death in action of her husband, Acting Sergeant Major P Sayles, contains the following passage:

“His death was instantaneous, and he was buried by Private W. Day of Bolton on Dearne, who was killed two hours afterwards”
