Pit Boy’s Death

Worked While Suffering from Pneumonia

How a 16-year-old Bolton on- Dearne youth continued work unaware “that was suffering front pneumonia and died in the Wath Main Colliery on Tuesday was related at the inquest at Wath yesterday on Arthur Sanderson, of Wath road, Bolton-on- Dearne.

It was stated that on Tuesday, after taking off the catch from a cage and running out empty tubs, he slowly collapsed on the ground. He had made no complaint whatever to his workmate but was unconscious before the latter could reach him.

Death was due to lobar pneumonia and acute heart failure, the pneumonia being of two days’ duration.

It was stated that if the youth had known of his illness and stayed at home he might have got rid of it. His going to work that condition was a contributory cause.

In accordance with the medical evidence, the Coroner recorded verdict that Sanderson died from natural causes, and that being at work in his then physical condition was a contributor cause.
