Montagu Tennis Cup Final

The final of the Montagu Cup was played on the courts of Manvers Tennis Club at Swinton in ideal weather, although the attendance was rather disappointing.

Mexborough (Harlington Lane) defeated Bolton by four rubbers to one and so won the trophy for the twelfth time. This was Bolton’s first appearance in the final.

In the men’s singles Jack Williams (Mexborough) and W. Webster (Bolton) gave one of the best exhibitions seen in this district in recent years, Williams winning 6-2, 1-6. 6-1. Hard and accurate driving on both backhand KO forehand was a feature of the game

In the women’s singles Miss D. Mason (Mexborough) defeated Miss A. Tyler (Bolton) by 8-6, 6-4 after being 5-2 down in the first set.

The other results were:

Men’s doubles: E. Morgan and A. Ibberson (Mexborough) beat P. Waring and L. Bourne (Bolton) 6-1, 6-0

Women’s doubles: Mrs. P. Waring and Sheridan (Bolton) beat Miss P. Rogers and Miss S. Maxfield (Mexborough) 6-2, 7-5.

Mixed doubles: H. Maxfield and Miss E. Longden (Mexborough) beat G. Cree and Mrs. Loraines (Bolton) 6-2. 6-4.

Mr G.W. W. Way President of the Mexborough and district L.T.A., presented the trophy to the Mexborough captain Mr E Morgan.
