Dearne’s 10 Stands Firm, Holds Points

Dearne  1  Atlas & Norfolk  0

Dearne, with only 10 men for the last 15 minutes, held on to their lead against Atlas and Norfolk, who were the visitors. Owing to holidays Dearne had a weakened team, but from the start played a very lively game, with Corbett in particular putting in some very hard work on the right wing.

Gordon had an early chance to give Dearne lead but he shot not strong enough and a good shot by Foster for the visitors was well held by Barker. Dearne now put on pressure and held onto the play for quite a while, a shot by Sidebottom finished just high and a grand one by Gordon was only just held by Crooks.

After a good pass from Corby, a shot by Watson was saved and the next one by this player finished wide.

Holmes should have given Atlas and Norfolk lead when only Barker to beat the ball, the ball hit the side net and ball shot from an acute angle by Foster was cleverly grabbed by Barker before the first half came to an end.

Injured Man on the Wing

Smallman had sustained an injury in the first half which necessitated him playing on the wing after the turn round. Dearne did the early pressing again but shot by Watson and Jones were well held by Crookes. Holmes went near the visitors and looked certain to score but without hesitation Barker dived at the ball and took it from his toe.

Atlas and Norfolk were more in the play now, but Barker stood up to three hard test with his goalkeeping.

Dearne’s left-winger Jones put them in the lead after 70 minutes and it was at this point that it became necessary for Smallman to retire from the game.

Being one goal down the visitors pressed strongly but for 15 minutes Dearne’s defence played calmly but strongly and held onto the two points.
