County Councillor for Aldermanic Bench

Mr. George Probert, J.P., C.C., who has been re-elected unopposed to the West Riding    County Council is to be nominated by his party for election to the aldermanic bench at the next meeting of the County Council and has an excellent chance, we understand, of being elected.

He has served on the County Council since 1919, when he defeated Mr. Richard Payne in the old Wath division, which has since been divided and Mr. Probert now sits for the Bolton and Goldthorpe division. He has served on the Bolton Urban Council since 1904, and out of six contests has five times topped the poll. His best election was in 1919, when he received 1047 votes.

He has been four times chairman of the Urban Council, and it was at the end of his third term that he was appointed a permanent magistrate. He has been chairman of the Housing Committee of the Bolton Council since it was formed in 1909, and took a large part in inducing the Council to undertake its first housing scheme, 48 houses at Highgate, before the war.

This was the first housing scheme undertaken by an Urban Council in any part of the country.

Since then the Council have built about 1000 houses. He is a member of the Don Valley Assessment Committee and of the County Valuation Committee. He is a checkweighman at the Hickleton Main Colliery, and has been president of the Hickleton Main branch of the Y.M.A. for 20 years.

He is a good sportsman, particularly interested in cricket, and a staunch supporter of the Bolton Municipal Cricket Club, of which he is vice-president.
