Mexborough & Swinton Times – Friday 31 October 1902
Assaulting a Police Officer At Bolton-On-Dearne.
Alfred Stewart, a miner, of Goldthorpe, was brought up a warrant charged with having ridden a bicycle without a light at Bolton, on the 19th Oct., and also with assaulting P.s. Johnson by knocking him down with a bicycle.
P.s. Johnson gave similar evidence to what he gave on the Saturday previous.
The prisoner, in defence, said that he was riding from Mexborough on the date named, and he had no brake on the machine, and when coming down an incline his light went out, and he could not stop
Fined 21s 6d and 7s 6d costs for riding without a light; and 10s. and 14s. costs for the assault.
The costs were much heavier owing to the prisoner’s non-appearance on Saturday
