1967 Budget for New Developments In Dearne
It is estimated that approximately £1 million will be spent on housing and ancillary services in Dearne. 1967, the “South Yorkshire Time” learned this week from Councillor JW Beckford, MBE, JP, Chairman of the council.
Work Will Begin
Work will begin on 186 houses and 170 garages on the Low Grange Estate, Thurnscoe, and on about 250 houses at Carrfield Lane, Bolton.
The development at low Grange estate is only part of a much larger scheme, as it is proposed eventually to develop about 80 acres. A contract amounting to £350,000 of the first 186 houses has already been let.
It is intended that under the 250 houses at Bolton be allocated to incoming Mineworkers. This had been agreed in principle and negotiation with the NCB are reported to be well in hand.
For Miners
Councillor Beckford said initially it was intended to build hundred and 50 houses for miners, but it was the Council’s intention to split these up among the councils housing estates.
“In other words, we do not want a new community established in an old one,” said Council Beckford, “We plan to build some of these houses at Bolton and some at Thurnscoe.”
Building has already begun on 42 old people’s bungalows in Basel Road, Highgate, and a further 16 bungalows will be built in high Street, Bolton, during the year.
It is also proposed to start the Thurnscoe Church Street redevelopment scheme in the early part of the year.
The Council plan to construct a new sewage disposal works between Highgate and Billingley and the main drainage scheme for Thurnscoe. It is estimated that this will cost approximately £350,000, but it will enable land between Highgate and Thurnscoe to be developed.
For old people
The County Council have plans for an old person’s home in Highgate Lane, similar to Dearnelea at Thurnscoe, and Dearne Council are negotiating for an old persons retreat at Prospect Road, Bolton.
Last year saw the opening of the new factory of Albion Ltd, on the Thurnscoe East Industrial Estate. This year it is expected that a start will be made on the same estate on a factory for Messrs G.O.Griffiths, who at present use St. Hilda’s Hall, Thurnscoe. The Approximate Area of the Proposed Premises Is 6000 Ft².
At the Welfare Hall
Council Beckford said that a modernisation scheme to Dearne welfare Hall will expect to be completed in about a month’s time. The workers involved new toilets, cloakrooms and lounge and will cost £10,000.
Work has begun on the central library at Goldthorpe and it is expected that it will be finished by the autumn.
Council Beckford commented:
“This library will put even our new one at Thurnscoe in the shade and will have added facilities, such as a quiet room.”
Proposals for the central redevelopment of Goldthorpe have been submitted to the Minister of Housing and Local Government and the Urban Council will be eagerly awaiting the results
