Outrage at Denaby
On Monday night, about eleven o’clock, Mr John Trickett, of Denaby, and Mr. Thyas Otley, of Bolton-upon-Dearne, were returning to Denaby from Rotherham market, when they were knocked down and robbed by two footpads, in a lane near Thrybergh, of money and bills to the amount of 100l. and upwards.
The day following two men were taken up on suspicion of the robbery, before one of his Majesty’s Justice of the peace for this Riding, when one of them, Thurlstan Grindal, was committed on Friday to York Castle. The persons who were rubbed had been drinking at Dalton-Brook ; and having frequent occasion to open their purses to pay for corn, etc. there is no doubt that the robbers, who were drinking in the same room with them, were tempted by the display of their gold.
The morning following all the bills and notes were found scattered on the turnpike- road, about a quarter of a mile from the place where the robbery was committed.
