Mexbro’ Ruby Wedding

Mexborough couple, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Birkett, of 16, Cambridge Street, Mexborough, celebrated their Ruby Wedding on Sunday.

Mr. Birkett, a 64-years-old railway worker, and his wife, Laura, were born in Mexborough, but both families later moved to Bolton an they were married at Bolton Parish Church.

Mrs. Birkett is well known in Mexborough as a fish and chip shop proprietress.  She opened her first shop in Wath Road and after five years, her two eldest daughters, Sheila and Margaret, took over from her.  Mrs. Birkett then opened a shop in Edlington.  She later started her third business in Main Street, Mexborough, now owned by Tordoffs.

The couple’s eldest daughter ran her own Sheila’s fish and chip shop in Wath Road until late last year when she and her family moved to Blackpool.

A celebration family party was held on Sunday at 97, Wath Road, Mexborough, the home of one of their two sons.

The couple have five married children, three of whom run boarding houses in Blackpool.
