Bolton Bus Owner Fined

Jane Evans, ‘bus proprietress, of Bolton-on-Dearne, was ordered to pay £7 at Doncaster on Tuesday when summoned for having failed to pay health insurance and unemployment contributions and for having failed to return a health insurance card in respect of a young employee.  The fine included arrears of contributions.

Mr. D. S. W. Grose, a Ministry of Health Inspector, who prosecuted, said Mrs. Evans ran a ‘bus service between Mexborough and Goldthorpe, and employed John Cutler as a driver.  On being employed, Cutler handed Mrs. Evans his unemployment book and insurance card, but when leaving her employment Mrs. Evans never returned them to Cutler.

When seen by an inspector, Mrs. Evans denied that she had the health insurance card, but produced the unemployment book which was unstamped, owing, she declared, to bad trade.  The arrears of contributions amounted to £4 13s.

Mrs. Evans, who did not appear, admitted the offences by letter.
