“Boys” Of Bolton Family Celebrate 78th Birthdays
There was a double 78th birthday celebration yesterday, Thursday, for twin brothers, Mr. George and Mr. Tom Pocklington, who are well-known in the Dearne area
Mr. George is the elder by twenty minutes and both wonder if they, are the oldest twins in the district.
The twins, who don’t see each other so very often nowadays got together on Wednesday to pose for a “South Yorkshire Times” photograph. Mr. George explained that he lived on his own and had no-one to “boss” him about, and his brother said he had a wonderful wife
Both are very active, George being a frequent attender at Bolton Old People’s Retreat, and a member of the committee, but his brother is satisfied to stay at home.
The elder brother lives alone, at 6, Furlong Road, Bolton. He is a widower of 17 years and is a busy “housewife” having to keep tidy his six roomed house. He is a retired engine man, and worked for 471 years at Hickleton Main Colliery.
Retired Together
Brother Tom worked the same number of years, but as an engine driver for British Railways. They both retired at the age of 66.
Mr. Tom lives with his second wife, 70-years-old Helena, at 19, Chapel Hill, Swinton. They formerly lived in Station Street. The brothers are the sons of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Pocklington, who lived for many years at Bolton, Mr. Pocklington will be remembered in the district as a local preacher for 50 years. They all attended Mexborough Road Methodist Church, Bolton.
The brothers attended school at Bolton as did their eight brothers and sisters.
The elder sister, Mrs. Alice Cousins is in her 80th year, living at Southsea, and the youngest sister, Mrs Elsie Askew lives with her former Bolton-on-Dearne husband in Detroit, U.S.A.
The remainder of the family live locally.
Both brothers had four children, but the elder lost his son in Japan during the last war. George has two grand-children and Tom seven.
