Bolton Youngster to Join Rovers’ Party in Top Soccer Centre
A sixteen-years–old Bolton boy will mingle with soccer’s elite next month when he travels to Lilleshall with his club, Doncaster Rovers, to take part in a course for senior club managers and trainers.
Each club represented can take with them a selection of their players, including first teamers, to Lilleshall, the country’s top soccer training centre.
Amateur forms
And Rovers’ manager, Lawrie McMenemy, chose Stephen Nowell, who trained with Rovers all last season and received his amateur forms tor re-signing last week, to accompany him, trainer, Frank Marshall, and a group of other players, on the course, which will run from June 20th to 26th.
Stephen, a former Dearneside Secondary School student, works at Highgate Colliery and plays for Dearne Youth Club at left back. He has also played for Don and Dearne boys.
Right Back
For Rovers in the Northern Intermediate League, he plays at right back, but he likes to think of himself as an all-rounder. In fact, Stephen of 31, Carrfield Lane, Bolton, has played in every position, including goalkeeper, in competitive football. There was talk of him becoming a useful ‘keeper, but all that went by the board, and now Stephen sees his future at full-back. “That is easily my best position,” he told the “South Yorkshire Times,” this week.
Of his chances of making the top grade, Stephen said “I am very hopeful. Lawrie McMenemy is a fine boss, and Rovers are obviously going places, I feel very confident of doing well.”
