Bolton Headmaster’s Busy Career

When Mr. Henry Augustus Kerry, headmaster of Bolton Junior Boys’ School retires on December 31st, he will have completed 45 years’ teaching service in district schools.

For 30 years Mr. Kerry has held posts as headmaster at Barnburgh and later at Bolton, but his interests have not been confined solely to the classroom.  He has devoted a great deal of time to the betterment of school conditions for the teacher and the pupil, as well as engaging in the social life of the district.

Born at Swinton, Mr Kerry comes of a family which has long been settled at Bolton.  He was educated at Bolton and at Rotherham Grammar School, beginning his teaching career at Goldthorpe Mixed School in August 1909, transferring later to Goldthorpe Boys; School.  In September, 1915, he was appointed headmaster at Barnburgh School, shortly afterward joining the Army and seeing service in France with the Royal Garrison Artillery.

Invalided out of the Army he was given temporary charge of Mexborough Dolcliffe Road School, later resuming his appointment as head of Barnburgh. It is 15 years since he was appointed headmaster at Bolton.
