Mr William Fawcett ( Lab.)
Highgate Colliery miner. Was N. U.M. delegate for eight years until June this year. Labour Party member for 10 years. Member of Thurnscoe Hill Parent-Teacher Association committee and a former member of Montagu Hospital Board of Management and Works Committee. His father the late Mr. J. W. Fawcett, and grandfather, Mr. David -Fawcett , were local councillors.
Mr. William Goldthorpe (Ind.)
Aged 58, Hickleton Main Colliery Training Officer, of 89, High Street Thurnscoe Did overseas Army service during first world war and won the M.S.M. Treasurer of Thurnscoe Community Centre, treasurer of Thurnscoe W.E.A. branch and vice- president of Thurnscoe Gardening Society. Been interested in local government for number or years, but trying for the Council the first time.
Mr. Mark Lane Nokes, Jun. (Ind.)
Employed as a joiner at Hickleton Main Colliery, where he has worked for more than nine years. Always interested in local government, but never before contested a seat. He had intended to stand in the elections next May, but the by-elections have brought his fight forward six months.
Mr. Sampson Oughton (Ind.)
Aged 35, shop manager, of 39, Chapel Street, Thurnscoe. Contesting seat for third time; previously , unsuccessful. Former policeman at Barnsley and ex-R.A.F navigator. Did three years wartime service in a home command. President of Barnsley branch of the Newsagent Federation and Deputy Superintendent Registrar of the Don Valley.
Mr Albert Potts (Lab.)
Aged 56, Dearne Valley water works employee. Labour Party member for many years and a member of Dearne Valley Executive Committee. An official of his trade union branch. Born in Normanton and came to the states during early childhood. Worked for about 20 years at Hickleton Main before finishing for health reasons.
Mr George Isaac Savage (Ind.)
Age 49, haulage contractor and coal merchant. Started working Thurnscoe with the donkey and cart selling firewood. Established his own business and is now in partnership with brothers. His work a Saint Helens Sunday school and is interested in the welfare of all people. Putting up for the Council for the first time, described himself as “the People’s candidate.”
